Week Zero is here this August 27, 2010. Football blood has
been running through the veins of high school coaches,
and it still runs strong. Despite putting in long hours in the
mornings, afternoons and evenings all coaches sound as
enthused as ever as they begin football season 2010.

But at the same time, most coaches and assistants
understand why most coaches don’t last anywhere near so
long.

Many people think coaching is a kind career to families.
Maybe so, however, like some coaches say that if you don’t
marry a woman who is understanding, that puts an internal
pressure on the coach deciding to stay or not in a football
coaching program.  Also, the pressure of parents and the
demands that sometime get placed by parents make it very,
very difficult. I think young coaches struggle with that
sometimes. And, young coaches at times have struggle with
the interaction of parents.

We have always heard coaches give a great deal of credit
for their success to their assistant coaches.  The majority of
high school football teams have a comparatively low rate of
assistant coaching turnovers, and their staff have generally
been composed of full-time teachers in the school system.
Coach Jose Briones, Head Coach for United South
Panthers,  stated to me "He learned early on the
importance of delegating authority to his assistants, trusting
them, and said that’s a big reason why
he’s almost always had a veteran staff.

In talking to Coach Tom Gonzales, Head Coach of the
Eagle Pass Eagles in early August 2010, he stated that if
head coaches have good assistant coaches, the burden is
not placed on you (the head coach), and your survival rate
is longer. He also stated that when you have people that
have been in your program with you and are working for the
same common goal, it’s easy because it’s fun to be with one
another. And how true, because one could see the
closeness that existed among them when Laredo Media
Sports was at their camp.

In our final thoughts: Laredo Media Sports wishes a
successful and safe  opening season to all coaches and
players for the 2010 football season.

AND, that is the way it is!
