To Divorce or Not to Divorce
LMS, 10.21.11
At this moment Laredo LBJ Wolves are seating in
fourth place with no one else to share it with.
However, Eagle Pass Eagles and CC Winn Mavericks
are each one game behind the Wolves. The fate of
whether the Mavs tie and share the fourth slot or lose
will be determined by tonights game against the
Longhorns. The Eagles will face a similar situation
that will be determine by their Friday game against
the Mustangs.
The divorce of LISD and UISD in sports, especially
in football. I have been saying it over and over that
LISD is land lock when it comes to student body
growth. When LISD football teams show up to play
varsity football, the number of players in each team
range from 30 players to 45 players. The Tigers,
Toros and Mustangs are forced to play a player both
ways -- defense and offense. Another situation that
arises is the quality of players, with all due respect.
With a small student body the quality or pool of
players diminishes. And, it is harder for a HF Coach
to implement a 100% football program.
Then you have the 60 plus player teams that show
up to play and of course the results of those games
have been proven these past weeks. It is not about
more expenses if LISD goes to 4A. It is about giving
the little guy a fair advantage on the field. As I said
before nothing is proven by teams that win big by
blow outs. Therefore, by putting expenses up front
before disadvantage teams in lack of population is
unfair. Everybody needs to play on equal grounds. I
think the decision that Superintendent Dr. Marcos
Nelson did was a bold one. And, one for the welfare
of the Toros, Mustangs and Tigers football program.
Because one cannot have the elite teams ponce
those teams every year. The football fields will lose
attendance and there goes money out the windows.
And, what will happen with the Elite teams after the
divorce? They will be playing with other teams of
their same quantity and quality. The divorce will
make games more interesting and competitive.
But if I am not mistaken, in LISD sports, aside from
football, all current teams (females & males) in
5A-29 remain very competitive.
Kids need a fair shake!!!!!!!!!! The expenses one way
or another will be made up. You see, The Super
Coach Marcos Nelson is a very intelligent
administrator that finds positive solutions and he has
proven it. And we congratulate him for going
against the grain and putting the players first.
