Week 5:  Surprises, Surprises, Surprises !
LMS, posted: 09.28.11.

This week I will keep it short and to the point.  Every
week the rankings for the top four seems to have a
face lift. As the weekend finishes another rankings is
starting up. And, too many are left wondering "where
are the teams that were expected to be on top".
Teams that the real media was saying have yet to
entered the top four zone. And two of the teams that
are tied for a position of that four are there as I write
these comments. These two teams were written of
early by the real media.

Laredo Cigarroa Toros  vs  Laredo LBJ Wolves
LMS, posted: 09.28.11. Thursday Game at SAC

With the emergence of running back Luis Vaca the
Wolves seem to have made a positive turn.  The
offensive backfield was reconstructed in a matter of
days to give the Wolves a big win over Nixon
Mustangs. But credit also goes to their strong defense.

The Toros are still in the hunt for that first district win.
The will be immediately challenged as that whistle
blows.  Toros QB Victor Martinez and RB Mike
Martinez are going to have to put yardage on the
ground and in the air. This game will come down to
who is hungrier for that "W".  Whom ever wins in this
game has earned the "W" in a hard hitting game.
Laredo Martin Tigers  vs  E P CC Winn Mavericks
LMS, posted: 09.28.11.  Friday Game at Eagle Pass

The Tigers and Mavericks are two teams sports fans
consider surprises at the half-way point of the season.

It will be Friday night on the gridiron, who will prevail
between the Tigers and the Mavericks?  Many in the
media had written these two teams off at the
beginning  of the season. These two teams, in 2010
were at the bottom of 29-5A. In district games they
are 3rd and 4th. I will let the experts figure that one
out before Friday. Both teams will get a stiff test
under the lights. A victory will give either team a
good start since the last 4 years.

Having seen both teams, I know it will be a closely
contested and heated game. Don't be surprised to
see one of these teams going into the playoffs.
Laredo's Nixon Mustangs  vs  Alexander Bulldogs
LMS, posted: 09.28.11.  Friday Game at SAC

The Mustangs come into this game with a lot of
tradition. Coaches Joel Lopez and Tommy Ramirez
both coached the Mustangs years ago into District
Champion titles.  They work together under that
dynasty along with Coach David Sanchez. So this
Friday one will probably see many plays and
strategies similar in nature.

The Bulldogs come into this game with speedy
weapons, big, fast, and aggressive defenders. The
Bulldogs defense has been a team of intimidation
and dominance so far in 29-5A. Their offense has
been clicking under the arm of QB Bryan Swain.

The Mustangs under the direction of QB Joseph
Contreras has to put the right momentum for his
offense to score.  He has the arm, height, and tall
receivers to give the Bulldog defense worries.

I believe this game will be directed by defense.
Laredo United Longhorns  vs  Del Rio Rams
LMS, posted: 09.28.11.  Friday Game in Del Rio

     GAME of the WEEK
Look out. This is not just a game. It is serious business.
The Elites again meet on the gridiron, the Longhorns
and Rams. The team that scores first will most
probably set the tone for the rest of the game.

The Longhorns are going to Del Rio with their backs
to the wall. Del Rio is a 100% football town.  They
eat, breathe, and etc... Football. And, not only that
they were wounded last week by Laredo Alexander.
Therefore, the Rams are mad as hell and they will
seek redemption. I am sure Coach Hoffman and
company have been at it all week long for this Friday
game.

The Longhorns on the other hand will use QB Alec
Salas to break down the walls of defenses to lead his
'Horns to the goal line.  The Longhorns will be tested
against a strong opponent. If they can come home
with a "W" figurative speaking in way it will be a more
comfortable future for them until the rivalry game
against Alexander.  Also, it will stop the Bulldogs
from being loners in first place in district games.
Laredo United So. Panthers vs Eagle Pass Eagles
LMS, posted: 09.28.11.  Saturday Game, Eagle Pass

This is a hard one.  Both Coaches Jose Briones
(Panthers) and Tom Gonzalez (Eagles), which I
consider, are my good friends. I have always
considered Coach Briones a good mentor for one of
my sons when he was an offensive coordinator at
United H.S. And, throughout his years at United
South we have talked off and on, exchanging various
ideas. He has always open the doors to Laredo Media
Sports.

Coach Tom Gonzalez is also good friend of mine.
We don't talk that much.  However, the times Laredo
Media Sports has visited with him -- we have felt very
comfortable. And, the citizens of Eagle Pass have
always been very courteous to us.  Various times,
while going to cover a football game there in Eagle
Pass, citizens step out and pay for our meals and gas.
Not that they have too. They always tell us that they
are very pleased to see the Eagles highlighted on our
web site. They tell us the only thing people new
about the Eagles was a small "blimp" on the San
Antonio Sports, until we came along. So, I say to
them thank you very much.

Therefore, I wish both of these team a successful and
healthy night. I know only one team can prevail. And,
one thing about these coaches is that they do not
panic when things don't go right. They just try to get
things right.
