PRE-Game STATS and Point of View

Alexander Bulldogs (10-0)
McAllen Bulldogs  (6-4)

The battle of the Bulldogs will be one to watch. The
Alexander Bulldogs are coming off a perfect 10-0
season and look to cruise by the McAllen Bulldogs
who finished 3rd in their district with a 6-4 record.
But, watch out! I think this game will be much closer
than what people expect it to be. Don’t let McAllen’s
record fool you. They were never out of it in any of
their losses in which they showed they can sling it
with the best of them. This game will be a shootout.
The outcome will depend on whose defense can
get more stops. It will be interesting to watch which
team comes best prepared to overcome its bad
tendencies. Lately, Alexander’s potent offense has
been slowed down considerably in the first half even
by second tier teams. McAllen is not a second tier
team. This spells trouble for Alexander. Can their
defense hang in there long enough? This could be
the key to the game, because if McAllen doesn’t
take a big enough halftime lead, the Laredo
Bulldogs have been showing that they can make
adjustments with a super elusive QB  showcasing an
unstoppable offensive attack which can blow out
opponents in the second half. And since Mcallen
sometimes has been outlasted by high octane
offenses late in the game, they better have some
cushion that their defense can work with or it could
be an Alexander victory in the waning moments.
Alexander will be led by QB Brian Swain who has
accumulated 3600+ total yards and 40 total TD’s.
His main targets are speedy RB Xavier Skaggs and
reliable WR Daniel Ramos who account for 2,300+
yards and 24 TD’s together. McAllen will be led by
QB Justin Salinas who had 2,300+ yards total and
38 TD’s. His primary targets are WR’s Cole Yarlo, and
look for him to go to Ben Griffith, 6’0” Philip Cantu
and 6’3” Garret Thomas when close to the end zone.
This one has all the makings for a barn burner, so if
you like high scoring affairs, this game’s for you.

United Longhorns (7-3)
Sharyland Rattlers (9-1)

Both the Longhorns and the Rattlers are looking to
make some noise in the playoffs, but for one team
the road will roughly have to end in the 1st round.
This game is arguably the best 1st round game in
South Texas, and the most interesting, as United will
come out with its aerial assault which averages over
295 yards passing per game, but Sharyland boasts
one of the stingiest secondaries around, allowing
only 116 yards a game through the air. And since
United QB Alec Salas was thrown off his comfort
zone last week by an Alexander defense which,
although good, is not as speedy as Sharyland’s ( one
of the fastest, if not the fastest, in the valley),the
Longhorns’ success might hinge on whether RB Billy
Williams can return to form and become a force.

United Longhorns 60 - Sharyland Rattlers 42

This game was expected to be one of the better games
in South Texas. And, boy, did it live up to the
expectations! Both teams came out firing, and neither
could stop each other. United’s defense had trouble
with Sharyland’s Spread Read-Option offense for most
of the night, allowing 42 points, matching the most
allowed since week 0 when they gave up 42 to state-
ranked Smithson Valley. The Rattlers offense had a
total of 480 yards with 316 of those attributed to QB
Tres Barrera, whose speed and quickness
consistently kept plays alive to either run the ball or
connect on long passes with his receivers, mainly C. J.
Cavazos, who proved to be just as versatile with runs
out of the backfield from motion and also big yardage
receptions. The Longhorns offense was just as
unstoppable with QB Alec Salas chunking up 364 yards
on 26 of 34 passing for a better than 75% completion
rate, 4 TD’s, and no interceptions. His teammate, RB
Billy Williams, who I thought was going to be the x-
factor in determining how successful United’s offense
would be, showed up in a big way, contributing 208
total yards and 4 TD’s (21-134 Rushing, 3 TD’s; 5-74
Receiving, 1 TD) while averaging 8 yards each time he
touched the ball. The O-line, too, came up big with few
breakdowns in pass protection, allowing enough time
for receivers to get open. Salas delivered, spreading
completions to several of his receivers, namely Gus
Garza, who exploded onto the scene with 6 catches for
116 yards and 1 TD. All in all the Longhorns put up a
total of 505 yards of offense -- 100 yards better than
their season’s average. Although United’s defense was
nowhere to be seen throughout most of the game, they
showed up when it counted the most, late in the 4th
quarter after they regained the lead 45 – 42 with 6
minutes left. Sharyland had 3 possessions after that
and came away with nothing. It was one of those
games in which you just wish no one had to lose.
Unfortunately, only one team was going to be able to
move on to the next round, and on that night, the United
Longhorns were that team.

Del Rio Rams 34 – Donna Redskins 7

The Rams/Redskins game was very physical with Del
Rio winning the battle, controlling the ball for most of
the game. Although the score was only 20 - 7 after 3
quarters, The Rams offense had been dominating the
Donna Redskins defense, nickel and diming them at
will with a very balanced attack which included some
very effective comeback routes from their speedy
receivers.  The Rams defense, too, controlled the
Redskins offense which became very one-dimensional
due to injuries forcing them to start their third string
QB. With the Redskins having to turn to their
strongman RB Eduardo Fraire without the benefit of any
real pass threat, all the Rams had to do was crowd the
box and wrestle the bull by the horns. They held Friare
to only 56 yards rushing, and, consequently, Donna’s
offense only had 2 good drives throughout the whole
game with one of them ending on an Interception at the
1 yard line. Del Rio held Donna to 66 yards of offense in
the 1st half and fewer than 160 yards for the game,
forcing their QB into 2 interceptions and 0 TD’s. Del Rio
just looked too good for the Redskins as they just
pretty much cruised to a Bi-District Championship.

Alexander Bulldogs 41 – McAllen Bulldogs 18

The question of which team would break its bad
tendencies was quickly answered by Alexander. They
started the game with demonstrative scoring power
and continued to do so for the entire first half, taking a
commanding 34 – 6 halftime lead. This was a
detachment from their tendency of late to allow
opponents to stay in the game through the break.
Whether it was by design or out of necessity to survive
the blitzing onslaught of the opponent, Alexander
resorted to the main weapon in their arsenal early on
to build what turned out to be an insurmountable lead.
QB Brian Swain turned to his escape acts to elude
McAllen’s blitzes and made them pay dearly with runs
and passes in 3rd and long or 4th and long situations
that resulted in 1st downs. He virtually broke the
McAllen defense backbone by tiring them out from so
much chasing him around and slipping out of their
grips. It seemed that McAllen understood that their only
real chance of winning the game was to take a lead at
the half and then try to hold on. And they came out
aggressive believing they had the solution. Their blitzes
were successful at times, but Swain, RB Xavier
Skaggs, WR Daniel Ramos, and the Alexander defense,
too, showed up to play in the 1st half. The 2nd half was
business as usual. For the game, Swain rushed 19
times for 63 yards and 3 TD’s. He also completed 27 of
37 passes for 265 yards and connected for 3 more TD’
s, 2 of them with Skaggs and 1 with Ramos.
