Alexander Bulldogs (10-0)
McAllen Bulldogs (6-4)

The battle of the Bulldogs will be one to watch. The Alexander Bulldogs
are coming off a perfect 10-0 season and look to cruise by the McAllen
Bulldogs who finished 3rd in their district with a 6-4 record. But, watch
out! I think this game will be much closer than what people expect it to
be. Don’t let McAllen’s record fool you. They were never out of it in any
of their losses in which they showed they can sling it with the best of
them. This game will be a shootout. The outcome will depend on whose
defense can get more stops. It will be interesting to watch which team
comes best prepared to overcome its bad tendencies. Lately, Alexander’
s potent offense has been slowed down considerably in the first half even
by second tier teams. Mcallen is not a second tier team. This spells
trouble for Alexander. Can their defense hang in there long enough?
This could be the key to the game, because if Mcallen doesn’t take a
big enough halftime lead, the Laredo Bulldogs have been showing that
they can make adjustments with a super elusive QB  showcasing an
unstoppable offensive attack which can blow out opponents in the
second half. And since Mcallen sometimes has been outlasted by high
octane offenses late in the game, they better have some cushion that
their defense can work with or it could be an Alexander victory in the
waning moments. Alexander will be led by QB Brian Swain who has
accumulated 3600+ total yards and 40 total TD’s. His main targets are
speedy RB Xavier Skaggs and reliable WR Daniel Ramos who account
for 2,300+ yards and 24 TD’s together. McAllen will be led by QB Justin
Salinas who had 2,300+ yards total and 38 TD’s. His primary targets are
WR’s Cole Yarlo, and look for him to go to Ben Griffith, 6’0” Philip Cantu
and 6’3” Garret Thomas when close to the end zone. This one has all
the makings for a barnburner, so if you like high scoring affairs, this game’
s for you.

United Longhorns (7-3)
Sharyland Rattlers (9-1)

Both the Longhorns and the Rattlers are looking to make some noise in
the playoffs, but for one team the road will roughly have to end in the 1st
round. This game is arguably the best 1st round game in South Texas,
and the most interesting, as United will come out with its aerial assault
which averages over 295 yards passing per game, but Sharyland boasts
one of the stingiest secondaries around, allowing only 116 yards a game
through the air. And since United QB Alec Salas was thrown off his
comfort zone last week by an Alexander defense which, although good,
is not as speedy as Sharyland’s ( one of the fastest, if not the fastest, in
the valley),the Longhorns’ success might hinge on whether RB Billy
Williams can return to form and become a force. Can United’s offense
become centralized around Billy Williams? If so, can Alec Salas
capitalize and deliver when his RB attracts enough attention to alleviate
some of the passing lanes? Sharyland runs the ball a lot out of the
Spread with the Read-Option but are just as dangerous with the pass
because their running game is very effective at exposing defenses badly
on any given night. They average over 350 yards a game offensively.
The Longhorns didn’t exactly contain Brian Swain last week, and
although Sharyland’s QB might not be as elusive, he is indeed very fast.
If the Longhorns don’t get overwhelmed by the Rattlers’ speed, expect
this game to go down to the wire. This game will be worth the price of
admission.

Eagle Pass Eagles (5-5)
McAllen Memorial Mustangs (10-0)

Both teams had very different paths on their way to the playoffs. Eagle
Pass got beat bad by the 3 best teams in the district, then got upset, and
finally had to squeak out a victory on the last game of the season to
make the playoffs. For McAllen Memorial life couldn’t be any better right
now. They are sporting their perfect 10-0 record and show no signs of
getting that 1 on the loss column. McAllen Memorial will be led by their
do-it-all QB Matthew Kaufmann who has over 1,500 yards rushing and
1,000+ yards passing with 30 TD’s Total. For Eagle Pass to have a
chance they only have to do 1 simple thing and that is STOP Matthew
Kaufmann, but here’s the thing, nobody has been able to stop Mr.
Kaufmann. Eagle Pass will need to play the perfect game to have a
chance and that might not even be enough.

Del Rio Rams (8-2)
Donna Redskins (7-3)

This game will feature two very physical teams going at it against each
other. They both have very solid defenses as Del Rio only allows 11
points a game and Donna allows 14, but the difference between these
teams is their offenses as Del Rio features a balanced attack with very
speedy running backs and wide receivers. Donna, on the other hand,
features smash mouth football as they just line up and run it down your
throat with their big o-line and 230+ lb RB Eduardo Fraire who has over
1,300 yards rushing and 20+ TD’s. The only big problem for Donna is
that they will most likely be without their starting QB Dion Padilla due to
an injury and their backup QB is out for the season which means they
will probably go with their 3rd string QB. This means their passing game
will take a big hit and Donna will become very 1-dimensional on
offense, so in order for them to have a chance they will have to play
mistake-free football because if not, this one can get ugly. If somehow
Donna starting QB does play then this game will be a toss-up as both
teams would be evenly matched.
